Founded in 2022, Hesperus Initiative is a registered non-profit company. The name refers to the Evening Star, from Greek mythology.

To us this bright star represents hope, a guiding light, and a glimpse of a brighter future. This is what Hesperus Initiative aims to be for those living with chronic pain. 

Chronic pain affects 1 out of every 5 people in South Africa, yet less than 20 % of the population have access to private healthcare. The vision of Hesperus Initiative
is to improve access to chronic pain care for all South Africans.

The Hesperus Initiative has big dreams, but we need your help to fulfil our purpose. Your donations will help us:

1. Fuel our Pain Warrior Project.

A ‘Pain Warrior’ is a person who is courageous, resilient and steadfast despite their pain. They accept that they are worthy of respect and a meaningful life. They see obstacles as challenges and take responsibility for their own recovery. A Pain Warrior is part of a tribe who together are writing a new story.

The aims of the Pain Warrior Project are to:  

  • Educate the public and professionals alike on living well with chronic pain and evidence informed ways to manage it.   
  • Provide social support for those living with chronic pain through community outreach programmes and social media platforms. 
  • Create a stage for persons living with chronic pain to share their stories and lived experiences. 
  • Develop healthy lifestyle initiatives which are an integral part of pain management.

2. Fund minimally invasive pain procedures in our state-of-the-art theatre complex, for those who would otherwise not have access to such treatments. 

3. Fund research projects

Hesperus Initiative is setting up Public Private Partnerships with Groote Schuur and Tygerberg Hospitals to provide services to the public sector while generating evidence to further our understanding of which treatments work for pain.
