Neck pain can significantly affect daily functioning and quality of life. A range of treatment approaches may be considered, depending on the underlying cause and individual circumstances.

Understanding Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain is a common condition. It can be complex to assess and manage, particularly when multiple contributing factors such as spinal structures, referred pain, and nervous system sensitivity are involved.

    • Pain in the shoulder or extending down the back, spine, or one or both arms

    • Referred pain in the hip or leg – occurring in specific clinical cases,
    • A variety of headaches

Our Approach to Neck Pain Care

The Pain Collective provides multidisciplinary care for people living with neck pain. Management may involve medical practitioners and allied healthcare professionals - including physiotherapists, biokineticists, occupational therapists, and psychologists, depending on individual needs.

Care is guided by clinical assessment and may include conservative, rehabilitative, and interventional strategies where appropriate. Diagnostic tools and minimally invasive procedures may be considered as part of a broader, individualised management plan.

How We Diagnose Neck Pain

During your first consultation, you will meet with a primary healthcare provider at The Pain Collective. This may be one of the therapists or one of the doctors, depending on the nature of your problem. This clinician will manage your case and liaise with other healthcare providers on the team. You will be asked some questions about your symptoms, medical history, and family medical history. Make sure you bring along previous medical documentation, a list of your medications, and any previous reports, as this will help during the diagnostic process.

Your clinician may advise a special investigation to aid in confirming your diagnosis. This may include blood tests or imaging studies such as an X-ray, CT scan, MRI scan, or radio isotope scan. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, your clinician will create a treatment plan for you.

Treatment Options for Neck Pain

Your individualised treatment plan – developed by the team after a thorough diagnosis – may include medication, therapy, lifestyle medicine, and non-surgical interventional treatment. If investigations demonstrate that surgery is required, we offer a referral to an appropriate surgical colleague.

As chronic pain is a multidimensional problem, your treatment plan is likely to consist of more than one type of treatment. It is critically important that you engage with the entire treatment plan.

What to Expect as a Patient

Your treating team will guide you through the assessment and management process, with each team member contributing within their professional scope. Communication between clinicians and referring practitioners is coordinated to support continuity of care.

Patient education forms an important part of pain management. Information and resources may be provided to help you better understand your condition and treatment options. Where appropriate, pain education sessions may be offered as part of a broader management plan.

Long-term management of chronic pain often includes self-management strategies discussed with your healthcare team.
